Renaissance Grids after Chuck Close

Renaissance Grid Process

Grade level: Grades 9-12

 

Learning Goals / Objectives:

Goal 1 : The students will identify the processes artists use to create works of art, by using their analysis of series, rough sketches, cropping, grid, and scaling.

 

Goal 2: The students will demonstrate the understanding of various techniques using the medium of charcoal and or pencil to render value.

 

Goal 3: The students will describe personal responses to the visual qualities of their own project, and their peer’s projects.

 

Goal 4: The student will be able to inform others of how to use the 4 elements of shading: highlight, shade, shadow, and reflected light and show their understanding by correctly using these elements in their composition.

 

Goal 5: The students will become comfortable working on a large scale. 

 

Materials Needed:

Reference Photo

Charcoal

Drawing Pencils

Rulers

Drawing Paper

Kneaded/Rubber Erasers

Blending Tools

 

 

Lesson Description:

  1. The teacher will demonstrate an artist who works using grid enlargement: Chuck Close (examples and video).​

  2. The teacher will demonstrate how to plan, crop, & grid a picture the students have taken of themselves. The teacher will demonstrate informal enlargement procedures based on our informal sighting techniques also.  â€‹

  3. The students will grid both their picture and a final piece of paper scaling it up to the appropriate size.​

  4. The students will draw their self-portrait with pencil and charcoal to create a final composition.

 

Assessment:

The students will create a final composition of a self-portrait or portrait in pencil and charcoal.
